Knee-deep as Leaves

                   —on an email from H.

in a wired java shop today
among caffeinators I
received a poem from a friend
who I’ve know since
before I understood friendship
but now I do
and appreciate his calling me
into the world of this poem
(which is not his, but his
anyway in that he saw the truth in it
and supposed that I might too)

With thanks it joins all the other truths
that have blown against my door
now piled knee deep as leaves
(though less brittle) in fall
.
