The Moon and Venus

I was standing at the gate of Janus
There was cool, blue space between us
My true eye knew that God had seen us

I was looking at the Moon and Venus
who were having conversation;
the sun had gone around
we three were left alone

They were poised there—
two questions pared
down to the bone

The clouds slid by like orange streamers
I called up from the land of dreamers
two notes wrung from this ring of bone:

Ship of fire—
Arc of birth—

I thought, if I raise my hand I’ll touch them
But again I settled on the earth
