Questions Philosophers Ask

1. Why, or more simply, does the world exist,
and if it does, is it funny?

there might just as well be nothing
instead of the risible sun which makes me laugh
whenever it comes up coincidentally
with the punch line of a joke
that also could never have existed
had some unknown condition
not brought a comedian to a point
in the cascading series of events
of a million million millennia
of imagining the humorous potential of bars
and the characters who might walk into one,
of lives which may be fictional
yet ring a bright bell in our brains
to wake the truth
of the absurd substance of ourselves
as we continue our desperate undoing
of the void that (alternatively) would have been
forever unknown to anyone
making the question
