she’s rambunctious
she keeps to simple thoughts
(so, at least, we think)
but will chase a ball, calculating trajectory,
analyzing parabola, quick
as a bright spark in dense fog
(again, we presume)
until the ball lands in thick brush
then, leading with her nose,
ferrets the round thing out
by a means of calculus that must
mean our sanguine Sophie
is no mere playful mutt,
but a covertly philosophical
overtly mathematical dog
