your soft-touch look —you cool chapeau,
drew me to the window where you sat
and led me to review my life-long
tendency to never wear a hat,

so when I took and touched your supple felt
and slid my palm round your brim
and put you on and pulled you down
and cocked you slightly right
and (mirror-perched upon my head)
saw the feather in your band
and saw my mythic father stand
I left that store a man
who wore a grey fedora
