“An artist’s life and work are not just a gift to mankind;
they are its necessity.” —Toni Morrison
—for E.W.
A true artist is
all in
…………. When an artist is all in
… she’s in for all
………………………..….. Elise
……… was all-in
all in to bring a thought to light,
maybe the isness of a star-struck serpentine cuff
or a blossoming
brooch
It’s near mysterious how this
brilliant new thing becomes
how it was dreamt into being
with meticulous care
how it was formed
exquisitely
To draw from mind a passionately new articulation
can only come from the first passion of its maker
to find the means to bring the thought forth:
to form the clay of it, then infuse it
with the spectral light of sun:
scarlet sparks
…. verdant relaxations
……… cool blues
…………………… the faithful silver of moon
and gold glowing from the lush
……… ….5-petaled mandala
…….. ……….of a brooch
An artist who’s gone all in
to harvest a thought by imagination
as if it must be touched, seen,
and perhaps pinned over a beating heart
will be recalled for her passion
for sharing the beauty of a thing she imagined,
made and, having been in for all, given
