Flash Fires

………………….
If thoughts became fossils
they might someday be found
by neuro-paleontologists
buried among the earth’s bones
in the strata of notions
like carcasses of trilobites in stone
the ghosts of pointing fingers
in basalt, caught in snapshots,
but they are not

most thought is here and gone
like firefly flickers momentarily alive
—wind through a larynx, blown,
brought by breeze to ears,
occasionally re-expressed
as echoes articulated by other
tongues and lips
until, repeated less and less,
they quit like smoke of flash fires
in a wilderness
