Trickle-down Economy

bartender answers phone, wine glasses overhead
in black rack upside-down like crystalline bats
bellike bodies with slim stems in barlight
glistening above a menu stack
glistening over her coiffed head

long before dawn will crack,
hours before her bed will meet her back.

rough start, single mom,
one kid, base pittance + tips,
deck stacked, enough said
except that she and child
and time slip
