I don’t know what it is,
but it’s Chopin. Alexa brought it on.
Since it’s of a down moment maybe
Alexa knows more than I do
of what’s right for me
now
What it is
are bell sounds—
no, not bells really
but the next best thing
Chopin could conceive
to be played on this
whatever instrument
which sounds bell-like
but which (again) I admit
I don’t know what it is
Being a man who spikes words
you’d think I’d have worked it all out
before committing thoughts to page,
but as I sit in magic
among Chopin’s inventions
listening, applying Chopin
to the days doings
wondering what (Alexa’s whim again)
Ahmad Jamal suddenly has to do with
my momentary attack of angst as
I ride Chopin’s liquid arpeggios
(leaving him in the dust) into
Ahmad’s jazz, sliding down and up
and out of doldrums on hot riffs
of his cool keyboard
