for B & J —on a photo

.
there’s something about
the top of a fresh foundation
that sloughs doubt,
old carpenter says,
sills next, more beginning:
girders and joists cut and set
with precision
smell of sawn spruce,
dry dust lifted, loosened,
sent aloft by work boots
tug and heft,
I see the whole thing
sills to ridge
rise out of thin air
windowed
doored
roofed
floored
builders grin,
what’s next?
—more beginning
