I have an uncle who
spent some time in the navy
and came to my school
in his sailor suit when I was nine
and there I was nine years later
in the navy and sailing too
Now I write to him in eldercare in N J
and each of his replies are tales of meals
detailed to the last asparagus
with updates on jello and time-tagged
with great precision, without fail and
full of hope that I might have been,
at that very moment, in sync with him
and had not forgot that he’s a person
who eats too
