Gaia

.
three sparrows nested in an arbor vitae
whose mouths gape as soon as mother
comes with grub

a trio of capacious hollows
swallow everything she gives
.
we watch from near the purple yarrow
in the shade of a magnolia tree
we see the way she waits on guard
outside the shrub

for her the way is canny, straight and narrow,
her love is unencumbered by the verb to be
.
