The Prayer Paradox

.

the French call a wound a blessure,
but a wound delivered by God
must be a blessing, for God is good we know
—then could a blessing be a holy blessure if so?

sure, depending upon who’s the wounded one,
he or she or me— if it’s he or she
count that a blessing for me (as when
I’m the only one alive post bombing,
or a victor in war), but for he or she
a blessing for me is a goddamn
lethal blessure

French or not, blessing or blessure,
this logic has been a norm of history:

wound him, not me, oh Lord!
is our prayer, our implicit
benediction in hate & war
