A Question of “Leaves”

leaves in wind

is it coincidence or did
the Minister of English Speech,
being playfully sinister,
marry two meanings
of that word (at least) :

…… the leave which lushly dresses trees
…… and the sadder leave at which we sob
…… and fall to knees ?

why enfold them both
in one embrace to be
metamorphed by poets
to wrap in glad or sad grace
everything that comes and goes:

……green noun that hangs till brittle brown
…… and verb that says: to vanish
…… in a mortal breeze?
