A Question of “Leaves”

leaves in wind

is it coincidence or did
the English Minister of Speech,
being playfully sinister,
marry two meanings
of that word (at least) :

…… the leave which
…… verdantly dresses trees
…… and the sadder leave
…… at which we fall to knees ?

why enfold them both
in one embrace to be
meta-morphed by poets
to wrap in glad or sad grace
everything that comes and goes:

……green noun that hangs till brittle brown
…… and verb that says: to vanish
…… in a final breeze?
