don’t say we can’t keep doing this
because we can —until we can’t,
or won’t
nature slams a door.
some things cannot supplant the essence
of that which we adore,
or don’t
just tonight,
walking across a vast tar floor—
the inverse moat
around a big box store:
there, not to keep the other out,
but to ease the other in to spending more
—oddly there, and just tonight
a once-in-a-lifetime brilliant sky
had stopped me cold
—clouds relaxed. They sprawled, rear-lit,
edged in gold leaf born of an almost by-gone sun
already below the mountain west
but still shattering the grown-old day
in a blazing blue-green mirror of
spacious light
………………….. who’d ruin that?
