Not Tomorrow

late afternoon when the sun’s gone round
and the pale moon rises and stands her ground
the stars come out and say,
you know, we’ve seen some crazy in our day

yeah, we’ve been around for way more years
than you can even contemplate through
your laughter and tears, since this circus began,
and we lit the sunrise of Man

…. everywhere you turn
…. something’s got to burn
…. got to give up the ghost
…. and sure as that’s done
…. comes some other one
…. to lift a glass in a toast

so here’s to you and here’s to me
and here’s to the way things ought to be
and here’s to the lives of our kids
here’s to keeping them off of the skids
here’s to changing the way that it is—

so that early some morning when the sun takes flight
we can step into that light
and turn to the stars and say,

you know, we did it better today,
did it better today,

not tomorrow,

……………………. today
