Moon and Venus

I was standing at the gate of Janus
there was cool, blue space between us
my true eye knew that God had seen us

I was looking at the Moon and Venus
who were having conversation;
the sun had gone around
(we three were left alone)

they were poised there—
two questions pared
down to the bone

the clouds slid by like orange streamers
I called up from the land of dreamers
two notes wrung from this ring of bone:

ship of fire
arc of birth!

I thought, if I raise my hand I’ll touch them
but again I settled on the earth
