Moon and Venus

I was standing at the gate of Janus
there was cool blue space between us,
my true eye knew that God had seen us

I was looking at the Moon and Venus
who were having conversation,
the sun had gone around—
we three were left alone.
They were poised there,
two questions paired
to the bone

Then clouds slid by like orange streamers
and I called from the land of dreamers
two notes wrung from this ring of bone:

…… ship of fire!
…… arc of birth!

I thought, if I raise my hand I’ll touch them,
but again, I settled on the earth
