A Third of a Life

ok, what gets up in the morning and says,

“new day,” has he forgotten eight hours
in sleep, where that time goes

what do we think of dreams

do we think the hours
spent elsewhere must have
to do with who we are

I’ve heard that when we sleep
we’re still ourselves, but
in an attenuated state
…………….. —sleep

out of it —but
where do those hours
of out-of-it go
—or take us
until something comes
to wake us
